Reverend Gary Lewis retired after over 25 years of service in spring 2018. Our church weathered this transition with the help of Rev. Joan.
In January 2019, we welcomed Rev. Dr. Barbara Purinton to our congregation as a full-time interim minister.
Reverend Purinton lives in North Hero with her husband, Rev. Charlie Puriton. Charlie (Retired Vermont National Guard Chaplain) serves the Johnson and Hyde Park churches as interim pastor. They have three children: Malcolm, Pamela, and Caitlin. Malcom is a history professor at Boston colleges, Pamela is a massage therapist, and Caitlin is a Warrant Officer in the Vermont Army National Guard and a chaplain intern at Dartmouth Hitchcock. Makeda and Arqhana are their grandchildren.
Since 1978, Barbara has served churches in Jeffersonville, Danville and North Danville, Richmond, and as sabbatical co-interim in Berlin and Mallets Bay. She served Bakersfield (2013-2017) and Jeffersonville (2015-2017) as interim. She has an MDiv from Andover Newton Theological School and a DMin in Ministry to Marriage and Family from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer). Barbara is trained in Transitional and Intentional Interim Ministry and is a certified spiritual director. She also volunteers as an EMT with Grand Isle Rescue. Barbara looks forward to this interim journey with us.
The congregation is pleased to welcome Rev. Barbara to the Vergennes Congregational Church!
Our church is also served by a dedicated administrative assistant, Mike O'Daniel, who helps keep every aspect of church life running smoothly. Kathy Barrett is our treasurer and manages, at the behest of our Trustees, the church finances. Bill Bowers and Sue O'Daniel jointly direct our talented choir with Jenny Bower providing the beautiful organ (and piano) music that accompany our services.
Marybeth Partington is our Children and Family Ministry C0-coordinator. Marybeth grew up in Vergennes Congregational Church and has been a member since confimation in 2004. She works as a jewelers apprentice during the week and lives with her dog Gus in town.
Sara Donnelly joined the staff in December 2019 as our Children and Family Ministry Co-coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Services. Sara lives with her partner Seth and their two children and animals in town.
