This Sunday, the first of Gary’s partial vacation (he’ll be coming in one day a week to check in for three weeks), I will be leading the service. We will be talking about one of my favorite stories from the Hebrew Scriptures: Jacob encounters a stranger in the night and wrestles until dawn (Genesis 32:22-31). There is a deep tradition in our faith of wrestling with and resisting God! Our New Testament text is Matthew 14: 13-21.
For families with children, please remember to talk to your kids about the story of their names. Guest teacher and Jewish educator Melanie Kessler will be talking with them about Jacob’s new name, Israel, their own names, and the importance of names. They may also get to try writing their names in Hebrew.
As we gear up for September, there are many opportunities to explore new ministries and get more involved in our faith community. I invite you to listen to see if any of them are for you!
