Summer Reflections

September already! Summer has blessed us with a variety of weather and experiences. Some joyful, some devastating. This is community. This is church. We worship and seek God’s presence and perspective for our lives. We hear the reminders always in the scripture to reach out, to do and be God’s people in the world. We hear also reminders to stop, listen and let God touch us, heal us, guide us. And we respond.

We worshipped at Button Bay and Bill Maziene gave a wonderful children’s sermon on the history of Button Bay. We celebrated Abigail Diehl-Noble, and thanked her for her creative years as Director of Children and Youth. We also wished her well in her new call as pastor at the New Haven Congregational Church. We shared Water Sunday with water from Maine and Alaska and Colorado and Covenant Hills and Lake Champlain and Connecticut. It was wonderful to hear about people’s travels as they poured their water into the common bowl to be purified for baptisms in the coming year.

We responded to requests to feed and clothe and bring electric fans to sweltering farmworkers. We responded to requests to person booths at the Addison Country Fair Days (a new experience!) and Vergennes Day (see pictures in this issue). We supported funeral receptions and community suppers in Middlebury. Mike and the Mission Committee continued to respond to numerous requests for help. The Food Shelf and Laundry Love did not take a vacation. We supported two children’s attendance at the UCC Summer Camp at Rock Point, a nd the Search Committee kept plugging away at the extensive document called the Church Profile.

And so: Congratulations and thanks to the Search Committee for completing the Profile. They will be meeting this month with the Rev. Lynn Bujnak, our conference minster, to go over the next steps. Lynn will join us for worship this month as well. (See the detailed report on page 2).

Welcome to our new members: Matt Hawes, Sara Donnelly and Seth Provencher! Seth and Sara are parents of Nova and Kallen. Matt and Emily Boone were married at the Church on August 31. We are glad to journey with you.

It was joyous to hear the children back at Evergreen Preschool this week and to anticipate the beginning of Sunday School on September 8th with the Blessing of the Backpacks and an Ice Cream Social!

I am blessed to be among you as your Interim Pastor. We have shared much in the last 8 months, and I am grateful to travel the liturgical year with you. We share joy and sorrow, work and worship, seasons and changes, as a congregation who continues to build on a strong foundation of faith and purpose and a deep relationship with God and one another.

Thank you.
